At Maleny Vet Services, we provide veterinary care for pigs kept as pets, on small farms or as part of larger operations. Whether you have a couple of backyard pigs or a growing herd, our team can help keep them healthy, productive and comfortable.
Pigs are intelligent animals with specific health and management needs. Regular preventative care, prompt treatment of illness or injury, and good herd health planning can make a big difference to their wellbeing and performance.
We offer on-farm visits and clinic appointments to support pig owners across the Sunshine Coast hinterland and surrounding regions.

Our porcine services
Health and preventive care
Prevention is always better than cure. Regular veterinary care helps identify potential problems early and keeps your pigs thriving. Our preventative health services include:
- Herd health planning and management advice
- Vaccination programs
- Parasite control and worming plans
- Nutrition and weight management guidance
- Routine health checks
- Reproductive and breeding advice
- Biosecurity and disease prevention planning
Routine health checks allow early detection of problems such as lameness, infections or nutritional deficiencies, helping pigs live longer and healthier lives.
Illness diagnosis and treatment
Pigs can be very good at hiding illness until they are quite unwell. If your pig is off food, lethargic, limping, or behaving differently, veterinary assessment is important.
Our veterinarians can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including:
- Respiratory disease
- Digestive problems
- Skin conditions and parasites
- Lameness and joint issues
- Infections and fever
- Reproductive problems
We use a combination of physical examination, diagnostic testing and practical on-farm solutions to develop the best treatment plan for your animals.
Injury care and treatment
Pigs can suffer injuries from fencing, fighting, environmental hazards or accidents. Early veterinary treatment helps reduce pain and prevent complications. We treat:
- Cuts and wounds
- Abscesses
- Foot injuries and hoof damage
- Fractures or trauma
- Bite wounds
Prompt care is especially important for hoof injuries or infections, as these can quickly lead to lameness or deeper infections in the foot.
Hoof trimming and foot care
Healthy feet are essential for pig mobility and wellbeing. Some pigs naturally wear their hooves down, while others develop overgrown claws that require trimming. Without proper hoof care, pigs may develop cracks, joint strain or lameness.
Our veterinary team can assist with:
- Routine hoof trimming
- Treatment of hoof cracks or infections
- Lameness assessment
- Sedation when required for safe handling
Regular hoof checks are an important part of routine health care for pigs.
Emergency after-hours care
When urgent issues arise (including birthing difficulties), we provide on-property emergency veterinary support during business hours.
Subject to availability, Maleny Vet Services also provides an after-hours on-call service primarily for our regular clients, but our rostered vet may also be available to see other animals in the district depending on their case load on any given night. Attendance for non-regular clients is at the discretion of the attending veterinarian.
If you have an animal that requires urgent care, please see our Emergency Care page.

Porcine Services FAQs
Do pigs need regular veterinary check-ups?
Yes. Routine health checks help identify issues early and allow your vet to advise on vaccinations, parasite control and nutrition to keep pigs healthy.
How often do pigs need their hooves trimmed?
What are common signs of illness in pigs?
Signs may include reduced appetite, lethargy, coughing, limping, swelling, diarrhoea or changes in behaviour. Because pigs often hide illness, subtle changes can be important.
Can pigs be treated on farm?
In many cases, yes. Our veterinarians can perform examinations, treatments and minor procedures during farm visits.
When should I call a vet during farrowing?
If a sow is straining for an extended period without delivering piglets, appears distressed or if piglets are stuck, veterinary assistance should be sought immediately.
Do pet pigs need vaccinations or parasite control?
We are open seven days a week so if you have any questions, please give us a call on 5494 3622 or book online!
