Protecting your pets in beautiful South East Queensland
Living in beautiful South East Queensland means warm weather, lush grass, bushland walks and outdoor adventures; but it also means parasites thrive here all year round. At Maleny Vet Services, we see first-hand how common (and sometimes serious) parasite problems can be in our region. Parasite prevention isn’t just about avoiding an itchy dog or an uncomfortable cat. It’s about protecting your pet’s long-term health and can truly be life-saving.

Why parasite prevention matters in our region
Our local climate creates ideal conditions for a range of parasites, including fleas, ticks, intestinal worms and mosquito-borne diseases. Even pets that spend most of their time indoors are not immune.
Fleas
Fleas love warm, humid environments like ours. They can cause intense itching, skin irritation, allergies and secondary infections. Once established in the home, they reproduce quickly and can be difficult to eliminate.
Intestinal worms
Roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm are commonly seen in dogs and cats. Some pets show no obvious signs, while others may experience weight loss, digestive upset or a dull coat. Certain worms can also pose a risk to human health — particularly young children.
Heartworm
Spread by mosquitoes, heartworm disease can quietly damage the heart and lungs over time. Because mosquitoes are present throughout much of the year in South East Queensland, prevention is essential.
Paralysis ticks
Actually, do you know what? These suckers deservice a REALLY, REALLY big mention…
The serious danger of paralysis ticks
In our region, paralysis ticks are a very real and potentially life-threatening risk.
These ticks attach to your pet and release a toxin while feeding on their blood. This toxin can cause progressive paralysis, beginning with weakness in the back legs and potentially advancing to breathing difficulties if untreated.
Early signs can include:
- Wobbly or weak hind legs
- Change in bark or meow
- Vomiting or regurgitation
- Lethargy
- Difficulty breathing in advanced cases
Paralysis tick cases can escalate quickly and often require intensive veterinary care. Sadly, without prompt treatment, tick paralysis can be fatal.
Tick season typically peaks in the warmer months, but in South East Queensland we can see cases for much of the year. Daily tick checks during high-risk periods – especially after bush walks or time in long grass (farm dogs included!) – are extremely important. Prevention is far safer (and far less stressful) than emergency treatment.

Preventative Meds FAQs
Do indoor pets really need parasite prevention?
How often should I check my pet for ticks?
Considering where we live, daily checks are ideal, especially if your pet has been outdoors. Feel carefully around the ears, under the collar, between toes, under the tail and along the belly.
Is parasite prevention needed all year round?
In our region, yes. While risk may fluctuate seasonally, many parasites remain active through much of the year.
Can my family catch parasites from our pet?
What should I do if I find a tick?
If your pet is showing any signs of weakness, vomiting or breathing changes, phone us immediately. If your pet appears well, remove the tick carefully and monitor closely but still let us know straight away so we can advise on next steps.
