Vaccinations are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your pet from serious and sometimes life-threatening diseases
At Maleny Vet Services, we follow current Australian vaccination guidelines while tailoring every plan to suit your pet’s age, lifestyle and risk factors. Whether you have a new puppy, a growing kitten or an adult pet, we’ll guide you through exactly what they need (and just as importantly, what they don’t).
Dog and Cat Vaccinations

Dog vaccinations - from puppy to adult

Vaccination needs change as your dog grows, so we create a plan that supports them from puppyhood through adulthood.

Puppies

Puppies require a series of vaccinations to build strong immunity as their maternal protection fades. Most puppies are vaccinated at:

  • 6 to 8 weeks, then
  • 10 to 12 weeks, then
  • 14 to 16 weeks

This course protects against serious diseases including parvovirus, distemper and hepatitis, as well as kennel cough.

After Their First Year

One year after their final puppy vaccination, your dog receives a booster. After that:

  • Core vaccination (C3) is typically given every 3 years
  • Kennel cough protection is recommended yearly

If your dog’s vaccination history is unknown or incomplete, we can safely restart protection with a simple schedule.

Leptospirosis

Some dogs may benefit from additional protection against leptospirosis. While not common in our immediate area, leptospirosis vaccination may be recommended for dogs who:

  • Go hunting
  • Spend time around cattle or dairy farms
  • Have access to stagnant or contaminated water

Our vets may discuss whether this is appropriate for your dog, depending on their environment.

Cat vaccinations - lifelong protection

Vaccination is just as important for cats, even those who live primarily indoors.

Kittens

Kittens receive a course of vaccinations during their first 4 months of life, usually at:

  • 6 to 8 weeks, then
  • 10 to 12 weeks, then
  • 14 to 16 weeks

This protects against feline enteritis, herpesvirus and calicivirus.

Adult Cats

After completing their kitten course, most cats require:
  • Yearly F4 vaccination
Even indoor cats benefit from vaccination, as viruses can be brought into the home unexpectedly.

FIV Vaccination

FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) vaccination may be recommended for:

  • Outdoor cats
  • Cats prone to fighting
  • Households where cats have outdoor exposure

Testing is required before starting an FIV course, and we’ll guide you through whether it’s suitable.

What happens at a vaccination appointment?

Maleny Vets’ vaccination visits are never just a quick injection. Every appointment includes:

  • A nose-to-tail health check
  • Weight and body condition assessment
  • A brief teeth check
  • Parasite prevention discussion
  • Nutrition and behaviour advice
  • Time for your questions

It’s one of our favourite appointment types – we love watching your pets grow up with you!

How to book a vaccination for your dog or cat

Booking your pet’s vaccination appointment is simple:

If you’re unsure about what your pet needs, it’s probably best to give us a call so the team can ensure enough time is assigned for your visit.

Veterinary care in the comfort of home

Some pets would rather skip the car ride, the waiting room and the whole “where are we going?!” situation. Our veterinary home visits bring experienced, compassionate care straight to your door, so your pet can be examined in familiar surroundings – on their favourite rug, in their own backyard, or wherever they feel safest. It’s thoughtful, personalised care with a whole lot less stress (for everyone). Read more about the benefits of home visits here >

Dog and Cat Vaccination FAQs

Most adult dogs require a core vaccination every 3 years, and kennel cough protection yearly. Puppies need a course of vaccinations during their first few months of life. Pets with incomplete histories can still be safely brought up to date – just give us a call.

After their kitten course, most cats require yearly vaccination. Additional protection such as FIV may be recommended depending on lifestyle.

Vaccines are very safe and serious reactions are rare. Some pets may experience mild lethargy or tenderness at the injection site for 24 to 48 hours. Our vet will perform a health check before every vaccination to ensure it’s appropriate.

Don’t worry, it’s common. Depending on how overdue your pet is, we may simply continue their schedule or recommend a booster. Give us a call on 5494 3600 and we’ll guide you.

We recommend avoiding high-risk areas such as dog parks until your puppy has completed their vaccination course. Safe socialisation is still very important… we’re happy to advise on how to balance both safely.

Yes. Even indoor cats can be exposed to viruses through visitors, open windows, emergency boarding or unexpected situations. Vaccination remains an important part of preventative care.
