Dog Grooming Assistant

Are you interested in dog grooming but still building your skills? Perhaps you’re currently studying, have recently completed a grooming course, or are keen to take your first steps towards becoming a professional dog groomer.
Maleny Vet Services is looking for someone enthusiastic, reliable and genuinely interested in learning the art of dog grooming to join our team as a Dog Grooming Assistant.
You’ll work alongside our experienced groomer, learning the practical skills involved in preparing, bathing, drying, brushing and grooming dogs, while developing the confidence to work with different breeds, coat types and temperaments.
This is an opportunity to build real-world experience in an established grooming service within a supportive veterinary practice, with the potential to grow into a groomer who can confidently manage their own grooming days and clients.
What you’ll be doing
Initially, you’ll work alongside our experienced groomer, helping with the day-to-day running of our grooming service.
Your responsibilities will grow as your skills and confidence develop, and may include:
- Bathing, drying, brushing and preparing dogs for their groom.
- Assisting with coat care, clipping and finishing techniques as your skills progress.
- Learning safe, calm and compassionate handling techniques for dogs of different sizes, breeds and temperaments.
- Helping maintain a clean, organised and safe grooming environment.
- Supporting our groomer with appointments, equipment preparation and day-to-day tasks.
- Building your grooming knowledge and practical skills, with the aim of eventually taking responsibility for your own grooming appointments and days.
Your safety and the welfare of the animals in your care always come first. You’ll be supported to learn at a sensible pace, with tasks and responsibilities matched to your developing skills.
Who we’re looking for
You don’t need to be an experienced groomer. We’re much more interested in finding the right person with the attitude, work ethic and potential to develop into a great member of the team.
You might be:
- Currently studying dog grooming or an animal care qualification.
- Recently qualified and looking for practical experience to build your confidence.
- Planning to undertake your own grooming training and looking for an opportunity to gain experience alongside an experienced groomer.
- Already working with animals and ready to specialise in dog grooming.
You’ll need to be someone who:
- Genuinely enjoys working with dogs and puts their welfare first.
- Is patient, gentle and observant when handling animals.
- Is reliable, practical and happy to get stuck into physical work.
- Takes direction well, asks questions and is keen to learn.
- Has good attention to detail and takes pride in doing a job properly.
- Is comfortable working on your feet, handling dogs of different sizes and keeping a grooming space clean and tidy.
Any previous experience in dog grooming, bathing, animal care, dog daycare, kennels or a veterinary environment would be an advantage, but it isn’t essential.

Training and qualifications
Applicants who are already studying, have completed a qualification or intend to organise their own grooming training are welcome to apply.
This position does not include employer-funded grooming courses or qualifications – you may choose to pursue these separately. You will receive practical workplace guidance and on-the-job experience appropriate to your role, alongside our experienced groomer.
