Dogs and cats are incredibly good at hiding pain. In fact, many pets with significant dental disease continue eating, playing and acting normally.

What happens during the check?
One of our experienced veterinary nurses will perform a visual assessment of your pet’s mouth and discuss any concerns. If we identify anything that concerns us, one of our veterinarians will review the findings and recommend the most appropriate next steps.
During the appointment, we will:
- Check your pet’s teeth and gums
- Assess signs of dental disease
- Explain what we are seeing
- Discuss home dental care
- Let you know if a dental procedure is recommended
- Provide an estimate if further treatment is required

What happens if my pet does need a dental?
If you’re a regular client who our Vets have seen within 6 months, we’ll schedule your pet for a professional dental procedure under general anaesthesia.
If further treatment is recommended but your pet hasn’t seen one of our Vets in the last 6 months, we will need to book a separate Vet consultation before we can schedule any procedure.
Every dental procedure is tailored to your pet. Some pets simply need a scale and polish, while others may require x-rays or treatment for damaged or infected teeth. The procedure may include:
- A thorough oral examination
- X-rays (if indicated)
- Ultrasonic scaling to move plaque and tartar
- Polishing the teeth
- Treatment of infected or damaged teeth, including extractions if required
Your pet will be closely monitored by our experienced veterinary team throughout the procedure and recovery.
Why dental health matters
Dental disease starts with bacteria and food debris forming plaque on the teeth. Over time, this plaque hardens into tartar, which irritates the gums and can lead to infection.
Left untreated, dental disease can cause: bad breath, painful inflamed gums, loose or infected teeth, difficulty eating tooth root abscesses and/or spread of bacteria to organs such as the heart, liver or kidneys.
Frequently asked questions
Can my pet have dental disease even if they eat normally?
Yes. Dogs and cats are remarkably good at hiding pain and will often continue eating even with significant dental disease.
Will my pet need an anaesthetic?
Anaesthetic will not be used during the complimentary dental check. If further treatment is required, a proper dental treatment will require a general anaesthetic so the veterinarian can safely examine every tooth, clean beneath the gumline where disease develops and take x-rays if needed.
